Washington, D.C. is one of the world’s greatest cities, and its suburbs play a significant part in that. Let’s take a look at the long standing rivalry between Maryland and Virginia, and how they both work to create one of the most educated and affluent regions in the country.
Maryland
“Crabcakes and football, that’s what Maryland does!”… that’s true, but that’s not all Maryland does. Not only is Maryland home to the 4th (Howard County) and 12th (Montgomery County) “most affluent” counties in the states, it also holds extremely high ranks in education statistics. Enjoy an afternoon at the Baltimore National Aquarium or take a stroll through the cobblestone streets of the historic capital city, Annapolis. Virginia
While Virginia is “for lovers”, it’s also for making some serious cash. According to Forbes, Virginia holds claim to 4 of the top 10 richest counties in the country, including #1 Falls Church City and #2 Loudon County (others are #5 Fairfax and #7 Arlington counties). But it’s not all about the money, Virginia is home to some of the countries richest history as well as some of the most beautiful landscapes… oh, and did we mention the wine?? With over 200 wineries, is quickly becoming one of the most popular wine destinations in the country. Virginia, specifically Northern Virginia, provides a great outlet for families who work in the city looking for great schools and a step back from the hustle and bustle. And here are some facts about Virginia you may not have known:
-Virginia is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains
-The states of Kentucky and West Virginia were created from sections of Virginia
-Loudon County was named one of Wine Enthusiast magazine’s top 10 wine travel destinations
-The state flower is not actually a flower, it’s a tree (dogwood).
So which state is better??
Bottom line is both states, whether they want to admit it or not, have a lot in common (politics aside). Both experience the wonders (or pain) that come with all 4 seasons. Both have excellent schools, hospitals, and history. Bethesda, MD and Arlington, VA are basically the same place. Maryland rules the craft beer side of things, while Virginia crushes some of the best grapes in the country.
