As they say, “April showers bring May flowers”, and at this rate we’ll be frolicking in a wealth of flora (hopefully of the Cherry Blossom variety) soon! But until then, don’t let the rain keep you from taking advantage of all the city and surrounding suburbs have to offer.
Washington, D.C.:
- The Museums: This one’s a given… Washington D.C. has a plethora of great (and often times free!) museums that are fun for all ages. Some to note are the Smithsonian- Air & Space, American History, American Art, and Natural History Museums. And if you don’t mind spending a little money, the Newseum is a great way to spend a rainy day!
- Visit The Capitol Building: One of the most symbolically important buildings in the world, the Capitol is truly an impressive structure. Tours require reservations in advance, but feel free to check out the visitor center at your leisure. More information on hours and access here.
- Turn a Page at the Library of Congress: Connected to the Capitol Visitor Center via tunnel, the Library of Congress houses the largest number of books in the world. Take a free guided walking tour of the facility.
- Check out the Tracks at Union Station: One of the most visited attractions in the city (~20 million people per year), Union Station is truly an impressive site. Take in the action from one of the many great restaurants or if you’re feeling extra adventurous, hop on the next train out!
Maryland:
- Go Climbing (Indoors of course): Earth Treks boasts more than 75,000 square feet of climbing surface (across 3 locations) and caters to all ages and abilities. Check out one of their centers in Rockville, Columbia, or Timonium
- Strike Up Some Fun with Bowling: Bowling in Maryland has taken on a whole new meaning lately. Bowlmor with locations in Rockville and Bethesda, Maryland offers “state-of-the-art bowling meets stunning design and gourmet cuisine for an unforgettable event experience.”
- Swim with the Fish in Baltimore: The Baltimore Aquarium, one of Maryland’s most visited attractions, houses more than 17,000 species ranging from stingrays, sharks, sea turtles, monkeys, and many more.
Virginia:
- Visit the Real-Deal Air and Space Museum: The Udvar-Hazey Center in Chantilly, Virginia is truly a site to be seen. With hundreds of aircraft and spacecraft on display throughout two hangers, there is plenty to see. The space shuttle Discovery will blow you away!
- Take in Some Tunes: Jammin’ Java in Vienna, Virginia plays host to tons of talented musicians in this intimate concert venue/coffee shop/bar. And their smoothies are out of this world.
- Wish Upon a Star: Forgo the rainy sky for a clear one at the David M. Brown Planetarium in Rosslyn, Virginia just across the bridge from D.C.. For show schedules look here.
